Striped Skunk

Striped Skunk

Striped skunks are adaptable mammals commonly found across New England in suburban neighborhoods, agricultural areas, and open woodlands. Primarily active at night, they forage methodically for insects, small mammals, fruits, and carrion, providing significant natural pest control while occasionally digging small holes in lawns while searching for grubs.

Skunks typically den under structures, in burrows, or natural cavities and follow a predictable seasonal cycle, with young born in late spring and remaining with the mother through summer. Although slow-moving and tolerant of human presence, skunks rely on clear warning behaviors before using their well-known defensive spray, making awareness and proper management important when conflicts occur near homes.
