Beavers are New England’s largest rodent and one of the most influential wildlife species in freshwater ecosystems. Built for life in the water, they use powerful teeth, webbed feet, and a broad tail to cut trees, move materials, and construct dams and lodges that reshape streams and wetlands. Active mainly at night and in the evening, beavers live in family colonies and store branches underwater for winter food, feeding on bark, cambium, and aquatic vegetation.
